Baptism

Symbol of belief

When you look at the hand of a person that is married, what do you notice? A wedding ring. If that person takes off their ring, are they still married? The answer is yes! Why? Because the ring is an outward symbol of an inward commitment.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

"...Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,"

Baptism is a picture of Christ's death, burial and resurrection.

Standing in the water is a symbol of Christ being buried in the tomb.

Coming up out of the water is a picture of Christ being raised on the third day.

Must be under water

Matthew 3:16

"As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water."

In order to show or illustrate Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection you must be totally under water. Remember, totally under water represents Jesus in the tomb. Coming up out of the water represents Jesus rising again on the third day!
